Dragon Medical One on Mac, and what it costs in 2026
Last updated · By the Sapience Med team
Dragon Medical One is a Windows app with no native Mac version. Microsoft supports Mac users only through a virtual Windows desktop such as Citrix, with PowerMic Mobile as the microphone. As of October 2026, Microsoft's Marketplace lists it at $123 per user per month on a one-year term, or $99 a month bundled with PowerMic Mobile.
Does Dragon Medical One run on a Mac?
Not natively. Microsoft's documentation is direct about it: "Dragon Medical One is a native Windows app; it cannot be installed and used directly on a macOS-based computer." The supported operating systems are 64-bit Windows 10 and 11 and Windows Server 2016 through 2025.
Microsoft does describe two ways Mac users can get to it:
- A virtual Windows desktop (the supported route). Your organization publishes DMO on Citrix or Omnissa (formerly VMware) Horizon, and you open it from the Mac with a client such as Citrix Workspace. In this setup the only supported microphone is PowerMic Mobile, the phone app; Nuance PowerMic II, III and 4 and third-party headsets are listed as not supported.
- Windows inside Parallels, VMware Fusion or Boot Camp. DMO is installed in the Windows virtual machine. Microsoft notes that "dictation at the cursor isn't supported in native macOS apps" and that this configuration "isn't officially supported by Nuance." Boot Camp only exists on Intel Macs.
For a hospital that already runs Citrix, the first option is routine. For a solo therapist on a MacBook, both add a layer of Windows that you have to pay for and maintain.
What about Dragon Copilot on a Mac?
Dragon Copilot, Microsoft's newer product that combines DMO dictation with ambient listening, is offered as a web app, mobile apps for iOS and Android, a Windows desktop app, and inside EHRs such as Epic. The web app supports current versions of Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome; Microsoft's installation docs don't say which operating systems are supported, so ask Microsoft or your partner whether a Mac browser is supported for your setup. The desktop app is Windows only.
How much does Dragon Medical One cost?
Nuance used to sell DMO directly in an online store. That store is gone: the old store address now redirects to a page that no longer exists. As of October 2026, Microsoft's Marketplace lists DMO for US customers, and its catalog shows these prices:
| Plan | Per user per month | Per year |
|---|---|---|
| Dragon Medical One | $123 | $1,476 |
| Dragon Medical One with PowerMic Mobile | $99 | $1,188 |
| PowerMic Mobile on its own | $20 | $240 |
Two things to know about these listings. Each plan says the purchase "WILL NOT be completed until you have emailed [email protected] to be connected with a third party," so in practice a reseller completes the sale. And the bundle is listed for less than DMO alone, so ask the reseller to confirm the price you will actually pay. Setup or onboarding fees are not published.
For comparison, Nuance's old store (archived May 2025) listed $99 a month on a one-year term, $89 on two years and $79 on three years, for up to five licenses.
And Dragon Copilot pricing?
Microsoft does not publish a per-user price for Dragon Copilot. It is licensed per user or by consumption through a Microsoft representative or a Cloud Solution Provider partner. Figures quoted on reseller blogs disagree with each other by a wide margin, so we don't repeat them here; get a written quote.
Is your DMO version still supported?
The current installer is version 2026.3. Microsoft's download page says that DMO long-term servicing releases "(version 2021.4.5 or earlier) will be end of life and no longer function after December 31, 2026." If your organization still runs one of those, it needs to upgrade before the end of the year.
Dragon Medical One vs Sapience Med for a Mac-based practice
| Dragon Medical One | Sapience Med | |
|---|---|---|
| Runs natively on Mac | No (Windows app; Mac via Citrix or a VM) | Yes, Apple silicon Macs |
| Windows | Yes | Yes, Windows 10 and 11 |
| Where speech is processed | Microsoft cloud | On your computer |
| Vocabulary | Medical, all specialties | Medication vocabulary focused on psychiatry and mental health |
| BAA | Needed; confirm coverage with Microsoft | Not needed |
| Price | $123 per user per month on Microsoft Marketplace (1-year term) | $149 one-time, lifetime license |
DMO is the stronger choice if you need every medical specialty, EHR integrations that a hospital IT team manages, or a voice profile that follows you across workstations. If you are a therapist, psychologist or psychiatrist working on a Mac and dictating into SimplePractice, TherapyNotes or a browser-based EHR, a native on-device tool is simpler.
